Vegan Macadamia Oat Cookie at Starbucks – a review

May 4, 2018

I periodically stop in at Starbucks for a Lightly Sweet Chai made with almond milk.  And sometimes I pick up the tasty and nutritious Vegan Protein Bowl in their refrigerator case.  But I always walk right past the baked goods, because as a vegan,  there have been relatively slim pickings in that department — until now! Vegans in the mood for a cookie are now in luck at Starbucks.

A New Vegan Item at Starbucks

I’m happy to report that Starbucks has introduced a new vegan treat.  It’s the Starbucks Macadamia Oat Cookie, and it contains oatmeal, macadamia nuts, almonds, coconut, and dried cranberries.  Yesterday I made a special trip to a nearby Starbucks to pick up a couple of the new cookies for a taste test.  Apparently it’s being rolled out on a wide geographic basis, so you should be able to find it at the Starbucks near you.

Results of Our Taste Test

My husband and I were happy to chow down on the new cookies last night, although given the size and calorie count, we decided to split one.  We enjoyed the chewiness of the oatmeal cookie, and we appreciated the replacement of the usual raisins with the dried cranberries.  It’s very tasty, and we are glad to have the option to occasionally add a vegan treat to our Starbucks order.  While eating the cookie, we examined the nutritional information for it on the Starbucks website.  Out of curiosity,  we compared the Starbucks Macadamia Oat Cookie to their Chocolate Chip cookie (though we had to adjust the numbers provided on the website to compare equal size cookies in the table below).

Taking a Glance at Nutrition

Looking at the results in the table, we find that the Starbucks Macadamia Oat Cookie does offer some nutritional benefits over the Chocolate Chip Cookie, particularly with regards to saturated fat, cholesterol, and sugars.  However, even with the oatmeal included in the Macadamia Oat Cookie, the dietary fiber is woefully low — probably because the first ingredient listed for the cookie is enriched wheat flour.  I do wish that commercial bakeries would discover the considerable advantages of whole wheat pastry flour!  Sigh.  Still, I’m relatively happy with the nutritional results for the vegan cookie at Starbucks — though I usually will stick with half a cookie, thanks.  As a woman weighing about 125 lbs, 390 calories would represent about 20% of my daily calories (1900 cal), and I don’t think I would often want to spend that much of my allotment on a cookie.

An Occasional Treat

I applaud Starbucks for increasing their vegan offerings, and I am glad that they have been responsive to requests for more menu items to serve the growing vegan demographic.  Let’s support their efforts by purchasing the Starbucks Macadamia Oat Cookie as an *occasional* treat.  After all, we want to be healthy vegans, getting optimum nutrition by eating mainly veggies, fruit, and whole grains (as contained in the Starbucks Lentil Protein bowl).  Check out my review of the Lentil bowl and be sure to pick it up if the Starbucks stores carry it in your area.

Make It at Home — But Healthier

A follower of mine asked if I could create a healthier version of the Starbucks cookie.  I accepted the challenge, and you can get the recipe here.  Give it a try and let me know what you think!

Would you consider coming up with a copycat recipe for this cookie? Maybe one that is a bit healthier? This is such a delicious cookie and I would love to be able to make something like it at home.

    Thank you.
